- Can you tell us about your background and how it influences your work?
From a young age, I was captivated by the act of drawing, particularly portraits, which became an enduring passion. I taught myself to capture their intricacies, with a special focus on the profound detail and emotion conveyed through the eyes. Over time, I transitioned from drawing to painting, yet the eyes have remained the focal point of my work, symbolizing my deep interest in humanity. I am profoundly moved by human connection, and this curiosity drives me to travel, meet diverse individuals, and listen to their stories. As an artist, I seek to convey the message that, despite our differences in ethnicity, age, or socioeconomic status, we share universal experiences—suffering, love, joy, loss, and the need to tell our stories.
- Which artists have had the greatest influence on your work?
Norval Morrisseau has had a profound impact on my artistic journey. Growing up, his vibrant paintings were a fixture in my grandparents' home. His use of bold colors and dynamic brushstrokes was a major inspiration. Beyond his technique, his indigenous storytelling through art resonated deeply with me, and it has driven me to weave my own narratives through the expressive power of my work. My grandfather often explained how Morrisseau's art reflected Indigenous beliefs about the interconnectedness of the earth, animals, and humans—a philosophy that resonates deeply with me. In terms of portraiture style, I consciously strive to maintain authenticity rather than drawing direct inspiration from other artists.
- What is your favourite medium?
I am particularly drawn to graphite, ink, and acrylics, each offering a distinct avenue for artistic expression. My choice of medium often depends on the emotion or message I aim to convey, allowing me to tailor my approach to the essence of the piece.
- Where do you find inspiration?
My inspiration is rooted in the profound connection I feel with portraits, particularly the eyes. To me, they are silent yet powerful communicators, capable of conveying complex emotions without words. I try to capture this intensity in my work, imbuing my pieces with the same depth of feeling that I see reflected in human expression.
- How would you describe the importance of art in society?
Art plays an indispensable role in society, fostering emotional engagement, creativity, and self-expression. It provides both an escape and a mirror, reflecting personal and collective truths. Through art, we gain the freedom to explore our inner landscapes and communicate profound ideas that transcend language.
- How do you define success as an artist?
Success, to me, is not measured by fame or recognition but by the emotional impact my work has on others. If my art resonates with people and evokes genuine feelings, I consider that a true accomplishment. It is about creating a meaningful connection, regardless of scale or audience size.
- Does art influence other aspects of your life?
Art is woven into the fabric of my existence, shaping how I perceive the world and approach challenges. It cultivates creative problem-solving skills and encourages me to think beyond conventional boundaries. In every aspect of my life, art remains a guiding force.
- How do you develop your artistic skills?
My artistic journey began at the age of ten, driven by a desire to learn and grow through continuous practice and self-reflection. Initially, I focused on graphite portraiture before evolving into painting. I believe that artistic development is a gradual process requiring patience and emotional investment. As a self-taught artist, I embrace experimentation and value the importance of allowing space for reflection between projects.
- How can your work address social issues?
My art often reflects my concerns about social and political matters. For instance, my painting Girl from Palestine emerged from deep frustration and sadness over the ongoing conflict, allowing me to channel my feelings into visual expression. I believe that art is a powerful medium for advocacy, offering a platform to voice perspectives and inspire dialogue.
- How do you navigate the professional art world?
As a newcomer to the professional art world, I have recently participated in group exhibitions in cities such as London, Paris, and Venice. While I am proud of these accomplishments, I remain eager to further expand my presence and continue growing within the industry.
- What aspects of the professional art world do you enjoy most and least?
I appreciate that the professional art world offers artists the potential for freedom, particularly the opportunity to make art a full-time career. However, I find it disheartening that talent alone isn’t always enough to secure recognition. Success in this field often depends on financial resources and connections, and many gifted artists never have the chance to exhibit in prominent galleries. That said, platforms like social media are shifting this dynamic, offering artists greater visibility and access.
- What factors determine the price of your work?
The value of my work is determined primarily by the time, effort, and emotional depth invested in each piece. Some paintings may take months or even a year to complete, depending on their complexity and the story I wish to convey.
- What are your ultimate career goals?
My ultimate goal is to hold solo exhibitions and expand my practice to incorporate diverse art forms and design. I aspire to dedicate myself entirely to creative endeavours, making art my full-time profession while continuing to evolve as an artist.
- How do you maintain a work-life balance as an artist?
I believe in embracing a multifaceted life. While art is a deeply personal and solitary pursuit, I balance it with my role as a landscape designer and by engaging in hobbies that rejuvenate me. Maintaining meaningful relationships and dedicating time to loved ones ensures that art remains a source of joy rather than a burden.
- What advice would you offer to other artists?
Never allow age or circumstance to deter you from pursuing your passion. It is never too late to embark on a career in art. The most crucial element is persistence—keep pushing forward, no matter the challenges you face.
