- Can you tell me about your background and how it influences your work?
I was born in a creative community in Oyo State, Nigeria, where making toys, birdhouses, and paper art was a part of daily life. This early exposure sparked my passion for art. I began expressing myself through drawings on book pages, tracing images, and even sketching live portraits, like one of my English teacher in secondary school. My childhood friend and I created comic books that told compelling stories.
Although my father tried to discourage me from pursuing art, my spirit remained unshaken. I later realized that art is truly who I am. These early experiences shaped my confidence and creative drive, and they continue to fuel my artistic expression with deep emotional and spiritual connection.
- Which artists have had the greatest influence on your work?
Leonardo da Vinci played a role in developing my artistic skills, but my greatest inspiration comes from the Nigerian painter Oloruntobi Aina, whose work deeply resonates with me.
- Share your favorite medium with us.
Acrylic paint is my favorite medium. Its fast drying time and vibrant color make it perfect for expressive, energetic work.
- Where do you get your inspiration?
My primary sources of inspiration are emotions, thoughts, and ideas, the very essence of art. Society and nature are secondary influences. I aim to use my art to reflect culture, values, beliefs, and history, sparking meaningful conversations and emotional resonance.
- Describe how important art is for society.
Art is essential. It preserves cultural heritage, communicates values, and unites people across differences, whether through music, painting, theatre, or other forms of expression.
- How do you define success as an artist?
To me, success means continuous growth and impact. It’s not a destination but a journey. As an artist, success is found in the ability to keep creating and to positively affect others through your work.
- Does art help you in other areas of life?
Absolutely. Art is my foundation. It nurtures my creativity, helps me solve problems, and gives me purpose. It supports my well-being, helps me understand people and culture better, and allows me to contribute meaningfully to society.
- How do you develop your artistic skills?
My talent was nature-given, but I’ve developed it through practice, research, experimentation, and bold self-expression. Over time, exposure and life experience have matured and shaped my creative voice.
- How can your work influence social problems?
My art speaks to issues of humanity, culture, emotion, and social justice. It highlights realities that need to be seen like peace, love, justice, and tradition. A society that ignores art risks losing its identity. Art is the heartbeat of cultural values.
- How do you navigate the professional art industry?
I stay true to my unique style while learning from others, building connections, staying informed about trends, and remaining open to feedback. Reading, networking, and collaborating are key strategies in my journey.
- What parts of professional art do you like most and least?
I love painting, it gives me complete freedom to express form and color. It’s the part I cherish most. The least appealing for me is textile art, though I still respect and value all forms of artistic expression.
- What do critics and collectors say about your work?
Critics' feedback fuels my vision. It's encouraging and uplifting. The comment that stays with me the most is: “Your art touches my soul.” That kind of impact makes everything worthwhile.
- What factors influence the price of your work?
I price my art based on its value, size, medium, and the time and effort invested. Every piece represents a part of me, and I ensure that each one reflects its worth.
- What are your ultimate career goals?
My goal is to become an independent and widely recognized artist who uses creativity to inspire and uplift society.
- How do you manage work-life balance as an artist?
Balancing work and life is an art itself. I set clear goals and manage my time intentionally to make space for both work and personal life, even when it gets challenging.
- What would you like to say to other artists?
To every artist out there, whether emerging or established, remember that being an artist is a privilege. Stay dedicated to your craft, and it will lead you to fulfillment, purpose, and endless opportunities.
