Stella J Richey

  • Can you tell me about your background and how it influences your work?

I have spent most of my life living abroad in over thirty different countries. This exposure has given me a deep appreciation for ancient cultures and religions. I draw upon my memories and experiences as starting points for my compositions, incorporating mythologies and symbolism from the cultures I have studied.

  • Which artists have had the greatest influence on your work?

I have a deep admiration for Renaissance masters and dark aesthetics, as well as contemporary pop surrealist artists.

  • Share your favorite medium with us.

Oil paint

  • Where do you get your inspiration?

My initial inspiration often begins as a mental collage. I then create a sketch that fuses elements of mythology and symbolism—drawing influences from Chinese, Greek, and Egyptian sources, ultimately presenting the composition through a surrealistic lens.

  • Describe how important art is for society.

Art is essential for society; it has been the core of humanity and expression from the beginning of time. It brings people together and relays stories. Storytelling is the oldest form of language and a primary means of cultural transmission.

  • How do you define success as an artist?

I believe an artist is successful if the art produced accurately depicts the feelings or imagery it was intended to convey.

  • Does art help you in other areas of life?

Yes, painting improves my focus and concentration.

  • How do you develop your artistic skills?

I received formal training at universities in the USA, Spain, and China. Additionally, I studied traditional Tibetan Thangka painting under a master in Lhasa, Tibet. I constantly challenge myself to develop new skills and refine existing ones.

  • How can your work influence social problems?

My artwork isn’t directly political, but it aims to draw upon common points in ancient cultures and between religions to make a statement of unity and common origin.

  • How do you navigate the professional art industry?

I participate in numerous exhibitions and art fairs. I am currently represented by a gallery in the United States, and I plan to open my own art gallery in the future.

  • What parts of professional art do you like most and least?

I love meeting other artists. I was never good at selling; I hope the art just sells itself.

  • What do critics and collectors say about your work?

Many people have expressed their appreciation for my color palettes and mysterious symbolism.

  • What factors influence the price of your work?

Scale, medium and complexity determine the price.

  • What are your ultimate career goals?

I hope to open my own art gallery.

  • How do you manage work-life balance as an artist?

My schedule is quite full, but I always find time to exercise, go running in the park, do yoga, and meditate.

  • What would you like to say to other artists?

Determination is what defines an artist.
